Help patch the hole in EPA's fracking air

Help patch the hole in EPA's fracking air pollution rules

EPA recently proposed new rules to reduce air pollution from NEW hydraulically fractured gas wells. And they're a big step in the right direction.
But what about the people that live next to EXISTING wells? THE WELLS THAT ALREADY FOUL OUR AIR AND CAUSE HEALTH PROBLEMS? Well, the proposed rule doesn't cover "pre-existing conditions".

Save 1900 acres of California

A Spanish company is angling to build a new vineyard in the town of Annapolis, California. Sounds fine, right?

But the plans call for:

Destroying 140 acres of majestic redwood forest,
Building the vineyard on top of the ancient burial grounds of the Kashia Pomo tribe (many of whom still live and worship in those woods), and
Harming the Gualala River, home to endangered salmon and other at-risk wildlife.

California resident Marie Casias likes wine, but she thinks this is crazy -- and people around the country are starting to agree. Marie's petition on Change.org calling on the California Department of Forestry and Fire Protection and other officials to put a stop to this is growing quickly. And we've jumped in to help her out by asking you to sign it too.
It's not often that the folks at the California Department of Forestry and Fire Protection receive this kind of national attention. Imagine their faces as your message, and messages from 50 states, start accumulating in support of protecting the forest. They'll almost certainly think twice before approving the proposal.

Save the Mabira forest

We recently informed you of the Ugandan government's plan to turn the Mabira forest into a sugarcane plantation and asked you to take action.
However, many of you got in touch to say there was a problem with accessing the action on the Friends of the Earth Uganda website.
The action is now available on the Friends of the Earth International website. Please take a few minutes to contact the Ugandan ministers behind the plan and ask them to reverse their disastrous decision.

Save the Colorado River

A private developer has a scheme to suck 81 billion gallons a year from Wyoming's Green River and pipe it more than 500 miles, over a mountain range, all the way to Colorado.
This pipeline would devastate trout populations, protected wildlife habitats, and local tourism and recreation spots in Wyoming, Colorado, and Utah. Plus, the water shipped to Colorado would be the most expensive in the state's history.

Keep the Mabira Forest in Uganda

The government of Uganda is about to give away 7100 hectares (over 17.100 acres) of the Mabira rainforest to the Sugar Corporation of Uganda, Ltd. (SCOUL), to clear cut and establish a sugarcane plantation. This grant of free land would increase erosion, diminish fresh water supplies, destroy a cooling micro-climate and destroy habitats for hundreds of endangered species. It would also violate legal protections as stated in Ugandan law and international treaties and commitments.

Indonesia.

Air Pollution from Oil and Natural Gas Industries

The US Environmental Protection Agency has proposed a suite of highly cost effective regulations that would reduce harmful air pollution from the oil and natural gas industry, while allowing continued, responsible growth in U.S. oil and natural gas production. The proposed updated rules would rely on proven technologies and best practices that are in use today to reduce emissions of smog-forming volatile organic compounds (VOCs).

Stop the destruction of Sumava National Park

Please join Friends of the Earth Czech Republic in calling on their government to abandon plans to cut down large areas of previously protected forest rich in biodiversity and home to endangered wildlife.
Sumava is the largest national park in the Czech Republic, and arguably the closest thing the country has to real wilderness. The national park encompasses more than 600 square kilometres of mountain spruce forests, peat bogs and other wetlands, glacial lakes and flower rich meadows.
The park is home to vital populations of lynx, caterpillar, black grouse, Ural owl and European elk. Sumava is a Natura 2000 site under both Bird and Habitat Directives, a UNESCO biosphere reserve, and its peat bogs and peat forests are listed as under the Ramsar convention on wetlands.
However, the a new director of the national park Jan Strasky has proposed large scale logging of spruce forests in the national park. This will lead to enormous clearcuts across the national park.

Stop Featuring Shark as Food

Sharks are apex predators. As such, they keep entire oceanic ecosystems in check. By feeding on other species, they are vital to our oceans.
Sadly, according to the International Union for the Conservation of Nature, as many as one-third of all shark species are threatened with extinction or are close to becoming threatened. Because shark populations are in such dire straits, there's no reason for people to be eating these threatened swimmers.
Food Network and its properties are the predominant places to find food television programming. The channel boasts its own magazine, and recipes are also featured on the Food Network's Web site and its other Web properties (including recipes with shark meat as an ingredient).
Tell Food Network that you want a policy stating that shark will not be featured as an ingredient on air, in the magazine, or in recipes posted on Food Network-owned Web sites.
