Canadian Mines Threaten Alaska Salmon Streams
In Northwest British Columbia, Canada, a modern-day gold rush is underway that could threaten Southeast Alaska’s salmon, rivers, fishing and tourism jobs, and unique way of life. Spurred by weakened environmental and fishery regulations and the construction of a massive new power line, at least ten large-scale mines are under consideration or development.
Most of these Canadian mineral projects are located in transboundary watersheds of key salmon rivers that flow into Southeast Alaska. The Taku, Stikine and Unuk watersheds are the cultural and economic lifeblood of Southeast Alaska. The mines are likely to produce acid mine drainage and toxic heavy metals.
Stakeholders on both sides of the border are asking for the International Joint Commission (IJC) to help resolve these issues. The next IJC meeting is April 18th.

Contaminación por el shale oil de Canadá
Obama: We can't afford another Mayflower
This week we watched in horror as a small Arkansas suburb was flooded with toxic chemicals from Canada’s tar sands. Families were evacuated as thick black gunk gushed out of the ground, contaminating an entire neighborhood in the small town of Mayflower. The home video got almost 3 million views on YouTube.1
It wasn’t hard to see that an environmental disaster like this could easily happen to you or me, right in our own backyard. President Barack Obama said from the campaign trail back in 2008, “Let’s be the generation that finally frees itself from the tyranny of oil.” It's time for the president to walk his talk.
Demand that President Obama get filthy tar sands out of the United States!
The Arkansas tar sands gusher came just two days after Canadian Pacific Rail shed 15,000 gallons of filthy tar sands into the Minnesota countryside. When you add this to the massive tar sands pipeline disaster in Michigan’s Kalamazoo River in 2010 and another tar sands pipeline failure in Yellowstone in 2011, it is clear that the transport of tar sands is extremely hazardous to the health of Americans, to the purity of our drinking water, and to the survival of our wildlife.
In the president’s own words, "As we stand on the crossroads of history, we can make the right choices and meet the challenges that face us.”
Tell President Obama to live up to his word and make the right choice: no dirty tar sands in the United States!
Thank you for taking action today, sharing it with your friends and loved ones, and for standing up with ForestEthics for a better energy future.

Tell EPA to put health over tar sands politics
Tell EPA to put health over tar sands politics
The cheap and ‘easy’ oil is tapped out. Now, our US economy and cars are relying on more hazardous forms of oil to fuel our needs - like synthetic oil from Canada’s tar sands. Even worse, this type of oil is extremely costly to our environment and to our health.
To make this oil, US refineries start with a harmful mixture of chemicals called a ‘bitumen blend’. Refinery use of this toxic stew creates sulfur dioxide pollution that is hazardous to humans. Tar sands refineries are putting the health of our communities at risk.
Please take action today!
