Bumitama Gunajaya Agro sigue deforestando

¿Aceite de palma? ¡No gracias!

Obama: We can't afford another Mayflower

This week we watched in horror as a small Arkansas suburb was flooded with toxic chemicals from Canada’s tar sands. Families were evacuated as thick black gunk gushed out of the ground, contaminating an entire neighborhood in the small town of Mayflower. The home video got almost 3 million views on YouTube.1
It wasn’t hard to see that an environmental disaster like this could easily happen to you or me, right in our own backyard. President Barack Obama said from the campaign trail back in 2008, “Let’s be the generation that finally frees itself from the tyranny of oil.” It's time for the president to walk his talk.
Demand that President Obama get filthy tar sands out of the United States!
The Arkansas tar sands gusher came just two days after Canadian Pacific Rail shed 15,000 gallons of filthy tar sands into the Minnesota countryside. When you add this to the massive tar sands pipeline disaster in Michigan’s Kalamazoo River in 2010 and another tar sands pipeline failure in Yellowstone in 2011, it is clear that the transport of tar sands is extremely hazardous to the health of Americans, to the purity of our drinking water, and to the survival of our wildlife.
In the president’s own words, "As we stand on the crossroads of history, we can make the right choices and meet the challenges that face us.”
Tell President Obama to live up to his word and make the right choice: no dirty tar sands in the United States!
Thank you for taking action today, sharing it with your friends and loved ones, and for standing up with ForestEthics for a better energy future.

Tell EPA it’s time to fix pesticide rules

Our pesticide rules are broken, and farmworkers and their families are the first to know — and be harmed.
For more than 13 years, EPA has been promising to fix the set of rules designed to protect farmworkers from the harms of pesticide exposure. We now hear that the process is finally in motion.
Tell EPA to get it right» Mark this year’s National Farmworker Awareness Week by urging policymakers to better protect the country’s nearly two million farmworkers from pesticide harms. It’s high time to strengthen this broken policy.
Here in the U.S., farmworkers are explicitly excluded from the protections other workers enjoy. Worker Protection Standards were designed to fill this gap, but they remain weak and unenforced.
Back in 1989, Cesar Chavez called out the pesticide harms farmworkers face:
Farmworkers and their families are exposed to pesticides from the crops they work. The soil the crops are grown in. Drift from sprays applied to adjoining fields — and often to the very field where they are working... The fields that surround their homes are heavily and repeatedly sprayed.
He highlighted the particular dangers to farmworker children. And he called for reforms. More than 20 years later, pesticide poisoning rates among U.S. farmworkers are 39 times higher than the rate seen in all other industries combined. The health harms of chronic exposure are also clear. Farmworkers are much more likely, for example, to develop leukemia, stomach cancer and cervical cancer.       .
Act Now, EPA» Improved Worker Protection Standards have been delayed long enough — and farmworkers and their families bear the burden. Tell EPA it’s time to fix these broken rules.

Niños rociados con agrotóxicos en Estados Unidos

Chemical spray poisoned my children

My name is Eron King. I live in beautiful rural Oregon with my partner, Justin, and our two young sons, Tobbe and Rowan. In 2008, our family moved onto our dream property—a stunning acre of land surrounded by streams and miles of forest near Triangle Lake.
That spring, helicopters began flying over the forest near our home, spraying toxic chemicals. We watched from my child’s bedroom window. Last year, these chemicals were found in our urine. We had been poisoned by logging practices that the Sustainable Forestry Initiative calls 'green'.
Will you join me in filing a complaint against the Sustainable Forestery Initative's greenwash to the Federal Trade Commission?
When we moved in we didn't know that logging companies, including Weyerhauser, actually own much of the forest around our home. We also didn’t know that Oregon laws, much to my horror, actually permit spraying of toxic herbicides. Over our community? Into our watershed? This couldn't be, I thought. Well, I was wrong.
I was shocked to discover that wood products that come from logging operations like this, which dump toxic chemicals on communities, are rubber-stamped "green" by a non-profit organization called the Sustainable Forestry Initiative (SFI). And then I found out, like you, that SFI is bought and paid for by the very timber companies it's supposed to certify.
I know you've already signed ForestEthics' petition asking the Federal Trade Commission to crack down on the lies of SFI. Thank you so much for that. Are you willing to take the next big step to stop SFI's tragic greenscam?
Please join me in taking two minutes to file a complaint with the Federal Trade Commission. ForestEthics has made filing quick and easy for you and your complaint will be delivered on April 22, Earth Day.
I'm excited to join Jim Ace and to work with all of you in the ForestEthics network to stop the SFI scam. Let's make this happen!
