Hold mining companies accountable for clean-up

Across the country, families that live near polluted industrial facilities are faced with dirty water, dirty air and contaminated soils. Too often, taxpayers are left with the clean-up costs.
Right now, the EPA is considering a rule that will require mining corporations to post funds, up front, to cover the cost of cleanup for hazardous mine pollution. These funds are a type of financial assurance in case the company can’t or won’t conduct clean-up.
The rule is simple: you make a mess; you clean it up.
The mining industry is urging the Trump administration to shelve the rule, or gut it by accepting mere company promises, known as “corporate guarantees,” rather than real funds. We can't let that happen:  Taxpayers are already on the hook for an estimated $20-$54 billion in cleanup costs at existing hardrock mines!  The mining industry is the nation’s leading source of toxic pollution.
Tell the Trump administration to protect our land, air and water!

Stop Trump from destroying Alaska's Bristol Bay!

A foreign mining corporation wants to build a monstrous open pit mine at the headwaters of Alaska’s Bristol Bay – home to the largest and most productive wild salmon runs on Earth. Scientific review says it will cause irreversible damage.
In 2014, the EPA initiated a plan to protect the salmon in response to urgent requests from Alaska commercial fishermen, tribes, hunters and anglers, restaurants, supermarkets, churches, conservationists and activists like you.
Now, the Trump Administration wants to reverse course on those protections and help Pebble Mine destroy Bristol Bay.

Stop uranium mining near Mt. Rushmore

Mining company Azarga/Powertech is proposing to mine for uranium just in the Black Hills of South Dakota, just 50 miles from Mount Rushmore – threatening drinking water for families and ranchers.
If this mine is built, it will be the first in-situ leach uranium mine in South Dakota. This type of operation pumps a chemical solution into a groundwater aquifer that contains uranium ore. The chemical solution picks up the uranium, and the solution is pumped back to the surface for processing.
Groundwater has never been returned to its original condition at any in-situ leach uranium mine in the U.S.
We can't afford to pollute clean water.
Tell the EPA to protect South Dakota's groundwater from uranium mining!

Protect vital Western waters from toxic waste

This September, the EPA proposed adding the abandoned, toxic Anaconda Mine site near Yerington, Nevada to the National Priorities List (i.e. Superfund) so that cleanup can be completed.
The Superfund Law provides federal funding to clean up hazardous waste sites.
Adding the Anaconda Mine site to the list of sites that need Superfund help is an historic step forward. The toxins left behind by the abandoned mine have been polluting the area, including local drinking water supplies, for at least 30 years. Nearby residents must drink bottled water because of radionuclides in their well water.
The battle to add the site to the EPA Superfund list has gone on for more than a dozen years. Now is our chance to take this fight to the finish line.
Tell EPA to put the Anaconda Mine on the National Priorities List and clean up the abandoned and polluting site!

Protect wild rivers from strip mining!

The public has made it abundantly clear, the pristine headwaters of the National Wild and Scenic Smith and Illinois Rivers near California and Oregon’s renowned Wild Rivers Coast are too special to mine.
With crystal clear water, robust salmon runs, and globally unique botanical values, these National Forest and BLM lands must be protected.
Over the past year, the Forest Service and BLM have considered a proposal to withdraw the headwaters from mining for 5 years while Congress considers permanent protection.
However, based on your overwhelming public support, with 99.9% of comments in favor, the Interior Department is now considering extending the ban on mining to 20 years. Given the gridlock in Congress, this is great news!
Tell BLM to support a 20 year mineral withdrawal to protect wild rivers!

I support Superfund in the wake of Gold King

Nine months ago, toxic mine waste flooded the Animas River in Colorado, leaving a bright orange plume of pollution in its wake.
Finally, EPA has decided to act to help the communities surrounding the Gold King mine and other similar mines and hazardous waste sites that have been polluted by toxic industries.
EPA is considering adding eight sites, including the area around the Gold King mine, to the Superfund National Priorities List (NPL). Being named to the list gives communities access to federal funds to help with cleanup.
Municipalities, tribes and elected officials along the Animas and San Juan Rivers have come out in support of such a listing. Stand with them to support Superfund designation.
Support Superfund cleanup at the Gold King mine and in polluted communities across the country!

Protect Coastal Wild Wild Rivers from Nickel Strip Mining

Strip mining threatens wild rivers, salmon strongholds & botanical treasures
Mining companies want to strip mine nickel in the pristine headwaters of the Wild and Scenic Smith and Illinois Rivers along California and Oregon’s renowned wild rivers coast. Nearby Hunter Creek and Pistol River are also at risk. Despite overwhelming opposition, the archaic 1872 Mining Law prioritizes mining over all other land uses!
With crystal clear water, robust salmon runs, and globally unique botanical values, these National Forest and BLM lands are too special to mine!
The Interior Department is considering a proposal to protect these wild rivers by temporarily withdrawing 100,000 acres of surrounding public lands from mining while Congress considers legislation —the Southwest Oregon Watershed and Salmon Protection Act— for more lasting protection.

What’s at stake?
- Vital stronghold for wild salmon, steelhead, and cutthroat
- Public lands that support a treasure trove of botanical diversity with one of the highest concentrations of rare plants in North America!
- Pure drinking water for local communities A 20-year mineral withdrawal is the best way to secure the region’s extraordinary wildlands, wild rivers, and salmon runs into the future!

Stop the proposed Rock Creek mine!

The Cabinet Mountain Wilderness provides a rare glimpse of temperate forest in northwest Montana. This small sliver of wild land covers just 4% of the Kootenai National Forest, but it provides cold clean water to threatened bull trout and refuge for one of the few remaining grizzly bear populations in the lower-48.
The Rock Creek mine proposes to dig under the Cabinet Mountains Wilderness, and dispose of its mine waste adjacent to the Clark Fork River in an outdated, risky impoundment. To keep the underground tunnels dry, the mine proposes to lower the groundwater table and divert the groundwater that feeds the overlying wilderness streams.

Canadian Mines Threaten Alaska Salmon Streams

In Northwest British Columbia, Canada, a modern-day gold rush is underway that could threaten Southeast Alaska’s salmon, rivers, fishing and tourism jobs, and unique way of life. Spurred by weakened environmental and fishery regulations and the construction of a massive new power line, at least ten large-scale mines are under consideration or development.
Most of these Canadian mineral projects are located in transboundary watersheds of key salmon rivers that flow into Southeast Alaska. The Taku, Stikine and Unuk watersheds are the cultural and economic lifeblood of Southeast Alaska. The mines are likely to produce acid mine drainage and toxic heavy metals.
Stakeholders on both sides of the border are asking for the International Joint Commission (IJC) to help resolve these issues. The next IJC meeting is April 18th.

Norway: Don't Pollute Fjords with Mine Waste!

All around the world, clean water is threatened by mining. Now, Norway’s iconic fjords are at risk.
The Norwegian government recently gave Nordic Mining permits to dump 250 million tons of mine waste over 50 years into the majestic Førde fjord.
Last week, thousands of you wrote to Nordic Mining to drop their lawsuit against 80 citizens who were peacefully protesting test drilling.
This week for World Water Day, let the Norwegian government know the world is watching. Call on Prime Minister Erna Solberg to do the right thing and protect Norway’s fjords from dirty mining.
Tell the Norwegian PM to cancel permits to dump mine waste into the Førde fjord!

Nordic Mining: Stop Suing Peaceful Protesters!

Last month, more than 80 people in Norway were arrested for peacefully protesting plans to pollute a pristine fjord with mine waste, and fined US$100,000.
The protesters were blocking drilling equipment to stop Nordic Mining’s operation that would dump nearly 6 million tonnes of mine waste per year for 50 years into the majestic Førde fjord.
This pollution would devastate healthy fisheries and the families and businesses that depend on them.
Now, Nordic Mining is suing the protesters.

Protect Montana’s Sweet Grass Hills

In 1997, the U.S. Bureau of Land Management (BLM) withdrew 19,687 acres of federal public lands from new mining claims to protect unique resources in the Sweet Grass Hills of north central Montana. That “mineral withdrawal” is set to expire unless the BLM’s proposal to extend these protections for another 20-years is granted.
The Sweet Grass Hills are central to a number of tribal creation stories, such as the Blackfeet, in which Napi, or Old Man, created the Sweet Grass Hills with rocks he carried after forming the Rocky Mountains.
