The public has made it abundantly clear, the pristine headwaters of the National Wild and Scenic Smith and Illinois Rivers near California and Oregon’s renowned Wild Rivers Coast are too special to mine.
With crystal clear water, robust salmon runs, and globally unique botanical values, these National Forest and BLM lands must be protected.
Over the past year, the Forest Service and BLM have considered a proposal to withdraw the headwaters from mining for 5 years while Congress considers permanent protection.
However, based on your overwhelming public support, with 99.9% of comments in favor, the Interior Department is now considering extending the ban on mining to 20 years. Given the gridlock in Congress, this is great news!
