Tell EPA and USDA: Stop Glyphosate Use Now!

A recent report from the International Agency for Research on Cancer concluded that there is sufficient evidence of carcinogencity for glyphosate based on laboratory studies. Glyphosate is touted as a “low toxicity” chemical and “safer” than other chemicals by EPA and industry. However, IARC’s new classification of glyphosate as a Group 2A “probable” carcinogen finds that glyphosate is anything but safe.
Sign the petition below to urge EPA and USDA to stop the use of the glyphosate and take immediate action to reevaluate its widespread use and registration status.

Harvard’s investments are wrecking lands and livelihoods

Harvard University has one of the world’s largest endowments, which manages roughly US$30 million every year. Some of this money is invested in forestry projects around the world, including a large plantation in Argentina which has wrecked the ecosystem and left many people wanting for work and food.
Harvard owns 87,000 hectares of land in Corrientes, Argentina, which are planted with pine and eucalyptus plantations managed by two companies: Empresas Verdes Argentinas S.A. (EVASA) and Las Misiones S.A. Pine trees consume more water than native trees, drastically reducing the region's groundwater. The trees do not provide food for local animals, so the animals' habitat has also been disrupted. Pesticides are used in the plantation, polluting the air and water.
Harvard says that these plantations are certified by the Forest Stewardship Council (FSC) and they are not damaging the environment -- but the impacts on the region are clear. Damage to the ecosystem combined with encroachment on lands traditionally managed by local communities has deprived many people of their livelihoods. Damage to the ecosystem combined with encroachment on lands traditionally managed by local communities has deprived many people of their livelihoods. Plantation workers work long hours for inadequate pay in dangerous conditions.
Emilio Spataro, an organizer working with local farmers in Corrientes, said that for hundreds of years the region was rich with wetlands, fertile farmlands and pasture. In less than a decade, Spataro says, the land has been devastated by pine and eucalyptus plantations.
This must stop. We are asking Harvard University to immediately divest from this project, put its money to a more responsible use, and publicly challenge that the Forest Stewardhsip Council for allowing such a damaging project to be painted as ethical and responsible.
Please write to senior staff at Harvard using the form above demanding justice for the environment and the people of Corrientes, Argentina.

Nevada's mule deer population threatened by gold mine

The world's largest gold mining company – Barrick Gold – wants to expand the Bald Mountain Mine in eastern Nevada. But Barrick's plan threatens the migratory path of the Ruby Mountain Herd, Nevada's largest mule deer herd.
Tell the Bureau of Land Management (BLM) not to ignore sound science! Because Barrick is telling BLM -- manager of lands owned by all Americans -- to do exactly that.
Barrick has:
- Told BLM not to use recent radio collar data collected by the Nevada Department of Wildlife;
- Hired consultants specifically to refute the findings of the Department of Wildlife; and even
- Refused to agree to future mine plan modifications if continued study of the mine expansion shows negative impacts to the herd.
Not only does Barrick – a Canadian company – seem to think it knows more about Nevada's deer than Nevadans, but it has said that even if the impacts are severe, it won't change the way it does business.
Tell the BLM to protect Nevada's mule deer from mining!

Protect Wild Alaskan Caribou, Sheep and Salmon

Protect Caribou, Dall Sheep, and Salmon Streams
Home to the renowned Porcupine caribou herd, moose, Dall sheep, and crystal-clear salmon streams, Alaska’s Eastern Interior remains one of our nation’s largest and wildest natural areas.

Create an Area of Critical Environmental Concern
The Bureau of Land Management is taking public comment on the creation of Areas of Critical Environmental Concern (ACECs) that would provide protections for wildlife and important habitat. Wildlife that is vital to the communities that live in the region.

Protect land near the Fortymile Wild and Scenic River
Two areas proposed for protection would help preserve important wild lands near the Fortymile Wild and Scenic River and the Mosquito Flats high-mountain wetlands. The area has a stunning diversity and abundance of wildlife, including healthy populations of grizzly bears, wolves, wolverines, raptors, and arctic foxes.

Urge the BLM to protect these wild places for the wildlife that live there, the communities that rely on them, and for the future!

It’s high time to protect kids from chlorpyrifos

The science on chlorpyrifos is crystal clear. Researchers have linked this widely used insecticide to serious childhood health harms for years.
Recent studies show that chlorpyrifos can damage children’s developing brains, reducing IQ and increasing the risk of autism. Yet EPA is — inexcusably — proposing that use of the chemical continue.
Protect kids, now! » EPA is taking comments on its latest health risk review for chlorpyrifos. Using faulty models and relying on industry studies, the agency’s assessment once again seriously underestimates harms to children. Tell Administrator Gina McCarthy her agency needs to get it right.
Home use of chlorpyrifos was banned over a decade ago, precisely because science showed a risk to children’s health. Yet it continues to be used in agricultural fields across the country.
Residues are found on many fruits and vegetables, including common childhood favorites like grapes, apples and peaches. Children in rural areas are particularly at risk, since the pesticide can also drift into nearby homes and schools — a risk EPA consistently underestimates.
Action is long overdue » Their own flawed review finds that farmworkers are in harm’s way, and raises concerns about infant health harms. It’s high time for EPA to take action protecting children, workers and communities across the country from this harmful chemical.

Stand with farmers protecting their land from mining!

Last December, indigenous Peruvian farmer Máxima Acuña Chaupe won a lawsuit for control of her land. Newmont Mining, who wants her land for access to a mountain lake to expand its Yanacocha gold mine, had sued her.
It was a hard fought victory. Over three years, Máxima was beaten and harassed many times by police officers and private security forces backed by Newmont.
Máxima and her family are still subject to harassment. Just last week, police officers and private security forces backed by Newmont's Peruvian subsidiary invaded her home and destroyed parts of her house.
Tell Newmont to denounce police intimidation and to ensure that Yanacocha’s security forces stop harassing Máxima and her family.
Urge Newmont to end harassment of farmers who oppose their mine!

EPA & USDA: Fix your broken systems

Stop dicamba. When it comes to new GE crops, the federal decisionmaking process simply isn’t working — and it’s most certainly not serving the interests of farmers, rural communities or public health.
USDA’s approval last week of Monsanto’s latest GE seed/herbicide combo shows just how broken things are. According to the agency’s own data, planting these new cotton and soy crops would dramatically increase the use of Monsanto’s harmful, drift-prone herbicide, dicamba. USDA officials gave the green light anyway, and EPA is expected to go along.
Send the email below to tell the leaders of USDA and EPA that they can — and must — do better.

Farmworkers deserve a safe and healthy workplace

This Thanksgiving season, please take a moment to honor those who make the national celebration of bounty possible — by taking action.
Like all workers, the country's two million farmworkers deserve a safe and healthy workplace. Yet protections from on-the-job exposure to pesticides remain shamefully weak. It's time for EPA to act.

Protect air and land from toxic uranium mining waste

Uranium mining has left a toxic legacy across the Mountain West, impacting Native communities more than most.
Tons of waste from these mines are dumped in pits or ponds where leftover uranium decays into radon - a deadly gas that causes lung cancer.
EPA hasn't updated radon air pollution standards since 1989.
Until now. Finally, EPA is proposing a new rule.
Their plan? Make things worse! End radon air pollution monitoring. Allow toxic waste pits of unlimited size. And use the same control technologies industry has used for decades.
Tell EPA to scrap their proposed rule and really regulate toxic uranium mining waste.

Stop Syngenta’s bee-toxic plan

Pesticide corporation Syngenta is pushing EPA to allow even more use of one of its bee-harming neonicotinoid pesticides, thiamethoxam. But the science is clear: bee populations are declining at alarming rates and pesticides are a big part of the problem.
Even at low doses that aren’t immediately lethal, neonics wreak havoc on bees — suppressing their immune systems and disrupting their ability to navigate, forage for food and return to the hive.
It’s time for EPA to step up and address this known threat, not put more neonics in the field!
Before the comment period closes on October 6, join us in urging EPA to say no to Syngenta’s request!

Inspiring Actions Against Fracking

Today, at more than 300 events in 32 countries on 6 continents and 30 states, thousands of people are joining together for the Global Frackdown to fight back against big oil and gas and call on their local officials to ban fracking.
Join in the action virtually by telling the United Nations that fracking is not a sustainable energy solution!
While people are calling for bans on fracking in their local communities, we can all do our part today by sending a message to the United Nations asking them to block fracking in their Sustainable Energy for All plan. This week we delivered a letter to U.N. Secretary General Ban Ki-moon calling for no fracking in the Sustainable Energy for All Initiative at the United Nations. It was signed by 250 groups in 39 countries. Ban Ki-moon has come out strongly against climate change, so it's just unacceptable that his Sustainable Energy for All Initiative allows countries to justify fracking for natural gas as a sustainable energy strategy.
